Birds in the Hand is a mission-driven startup that publishes apps that tie together citizen science, conservation and birds.  We are a developer of iOS and Android apps for birders.  Our apps currently collect several million bird sightings per month worldwide for the eBird citizen science project, making us the largest such app in the world.  We also developed Merlin, which is the most downloaded bird app in the world this year.

Job Description:  This is a senior leadership position that will play a key role in determining the overall direction of the company.  

  • Define our product road map and improve our user experience

  • Develop and excecute multi-year plan to grow and monetize our user base as we work to accomplish our mission

  • Identify, plan and implement strategic partnerships that strengthen our ability to deliver world-class digital content to our users and grow our user base

Job Description:

  • Work with CEO, COO and board of directors to define strategic plan and lead implementation of marketing strategy

  • Plan and execute best-in-class marketing, including marketing performance metrics

  • Cultivate and manage relationships with current and potential strategic marketing partners in travel, digital publishing, traditional publishing
  • Lead outreach to new potential strategic partners, including publishers, content providers and marketing strategic partners


  • Senior management experience in marketing, sales, business development or strategic planning roles in a startup or other rapid-growth environment

  • MBA or equivalent

  • Proven ability to identify, define and close high-value strategic partnership relationships

  • Direct work experience in one or more of the following areas: publishing, especially digital publishing; web-based business development; or marketing for a web-enabled or mobile software businesses

Web Marketer

BirdsEye is looking for someone to help us design and manage our social media, SEO, web, PPC and print advertising. Our ideal candidate is a serious birder with 2+ years of professional experience in web marketing. This is a part-time position, and we are flexible in terms of hours and location.

This could be an ideal position for someone who wants to earn some extra money for birding, or who just thinks that being part of the BirdsEye effort would be awesome (which is true!).


    • Demonstrated expeirence in designing and managing results oriented social media campaigns.
    • 2+ years experience in web, PPC, and print advertising.
    • 2+ years experience in SEO
    • Good written English skills, a modern computer and access to high-speed internet are required.
    • Excellent skills and/or familiarity with birds in another part of the world (e.g. Australia, Europe, Asia or Latin America) is a huge plus!

GIS Intern

Location: anywhere as long as you have a good internet connection

Dates: summer / fall 2014

Job Summary: Your job will be to help create the best birding app that ever existed.  

      • Manupulate species range information from various  sources by developing automated  scripts
      • Developing methods to extrapolate species ranges in areas with little or no data based on data assembled from the above sources
      • Work with your BirdsEye teammates to define and execute improvements for BirdsEye enhancements, including data structures, code architecture, API definitions
      • Display range information on maps
      • Areas of knowledge: iOS app development, including publishing in the app store, SQL, PostGRES, Python and mapping
      • Work with your teammates to prioritize enhancements and bug fixes over time 


      • undergrad, recent graduate or grad student at a leading academic institution
      • academic/classroom exposure to GIS concepts, preferably with a GIS focus
      • programming skills: able to create and run scripts to gather and manipulate GIS data
      • Preference given to someone with knowledge and interest in biology
      • Undergraduate degree in computer science or equivalent work experience


      • Preference will be given to birders
      • Important Note  excellent English language skills are NOT a requirement for this position.  We would be happy to have a birder on our team who lives and works in Europe, Africa, Latin America or Asia to help provide us with local birding knowledge in those areas.

Pay: $10-12/hour for undergrads or $20-25/hr for grad students in GIS; depending on experience and location

Android App Developer

Job Summary: Your job is to work with a team of motivated, bright, fanatical birders to help build the best Android birding app that ever existed!    

      • Work with your BirdsEye teammates to define the specifications for BirdsEye for Android 
      • Areas of knowledge: Android app development, including publishing in the Google Market, in-app purchases, SQLite, APIs, user account subscription management, crash logging, conversion tracking, GPS and mapping
      • Develop, present, implement and document technical solutions to meet specifications
      • Work with your teammates to prioritize enhancements and bug fixes over time 
      • iOS app development, server-side Phython/SQL or server maintenance experience would all be considered a plus


      • Undergraduate degree in computer science or equivalent work experience
      • 3+ years experience as a programmer, with at least one commerical Android app under your belt
      • Important Note  The ability to communicate clearly in written English or Spanish is REQUIRED, but spoken English is not a requirement.  
      • Strong preference will be given to birders, especially someone who brings extensive familiarity with birds and other wildlife outside of the US.

Pay: $40 to 85/hour depending on experience and location
